Supervision at Curious Space Therapy is an exploration of all parts of the therapist self: who you are, where you come from, what you’ve learned so far, and how you can use your individuality to benefit your own clients.

Laura’s supervision philosophy puts artmaking at the center of the process. She utilizes El Duende Process Painting (EDPP), a method developed by art therapist Abbe Miller, PhD, ATR-BC, LPC, to create flow and connect with visual language. EDPP is about noticing what is happening in the moment, both internally and in the space where you are creating. Laura offers individual and group supervision that utilize EDPP, and she creates artwork in sessions alongside residents. Laura received training as an EDPP supervisor in 2017.

EDPP is a one-canvas painting that residents revisit throughout their time in supervision, adding layers of paint and mixed media in a state of spontaneous expression without judgment or limitations. EDPP is a reflection of therapy itself, building upon layers of imagery and self-discovery to create something authentic. Residents learn to challenge their clinical skills in a way that feels familiar but elicits discomfort to facilitate growth.

Laura has supervised student interns from The George Washington University and Southwestern College; Residents in Counseling in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and Provisional Registered Art Therapists in Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington. In each of these settings EDPP has put the creative process front and center to enhance the learning environment in ways we can’t anticipate.

Laura offers supervision for clinicians accruing hours for the Registered Art Therapist (ATR) credential and the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) license in Virginia. There are virtual and in-person options available for individual and group supervision.

Virtual supervision for art therapy is not available in all states due to varying national and state regulations. Refer to your state’s regulatory board to determine if supervision hours at Curious Space Therapy will count toward your credential.

Supervision is different from therapy. All post-graduate clinicians who are eligible to accrue hours for credentialing and licensure must complete certain supervision standards. While both supervision and therapy focus on growth, change, and identity, supervision is different in that it is a professional relationship meant to enhance clinical skills such as diagnosis, treatment planning, case formulation, ethics, and professional development.

Individual supervision is required of all clinicians working toward a professional license or credential. Individual sessions provide unique feedback and professional support in a one-on-one setting. We work together to develop your whole therapist self.
